Many people would assume that you have to be physically struck before you can physically respond in Self Defense. Let me tell you now that this is totally untrue, well certainly in any civilized country of the World anyway. If you could only respond after you had been attacked, then it could simply be too late by then.
In most civilized countries around the World, you have the right to defend yourself. However, as this article is not intended as legal advice, I would advise that you check the Self Defense laws for your Country, State, Province or area.
You do not have to wait to be struck in order to defend yourself and the Justice systems do understand this fact. One punch, strike or hold could be used to knock you down, even if they have not already caused serious damage, this could lead to a whole barrage of other strikes and even end up in death.
If you feel that the threat or provocation of a situation is enough then you would be crazy not to take action before the physical actions started. Being Pre-emptive in such a situation is a strategy that could well save your life.
Action is faster than reaction, so the average person is not going to be able to react quickly enough to see, access and move quick enough to block or evade an attack, whether it be empty handed or with a weapon. Not only is it advisable that your strike first but to strike first with fast distracting strikes in order for your hard hitting strikes that you follow up with, to get through to the intended target.
Remember, it has been done
before by many people. There are thousands of stories of people successfully
defending themselves against all odds, you just tend to hear more about the bad
ones. The fact that these other people have protected themselves is an
indicator that it is certainly possible for you to make a difference.
If you genuinely feel that your life is in danger then you have the right to do whatever it takes in order to save yourself. Once the threat is stopped then that is when you would stop your actions. For you to carry on striking once the threat is eliminated could cause trouble for yourself.
Your goal should be to avoid danger in the first place, that is not always possible so when that was is not possible then your goal should be to escape the situation using whatever force is necessary to achieve that and get to safety as quickly as possible.
A struggle should be ended as quickly as possible as the longer it goes, the more the situation could go against you. You becoming very weak, tired or the attacker’s accomplices coming to the scene. This is the reason you need to discover exactly where and how to set up and strike for maximum effect.
